JOURNALING
Journaling is the practice of regularly recording your inner thoughts, feelings, experiences, and reflections in written format.
BENEFITS OF JOURNALING
-
Stress Reduction: Regular journaling has been shown in research to reduce stress levels. Writing about stressful events, ideas, or feelings can help individuals manage their emotions and cope with difficult challenges.
-
Self-Reflection: The practice of journaling encourages self-awareness. We can gain insight into our thoughts, behaviors, patterns, and reactions which can lead to personal growth and clarity.
-
Creativity: Writing daily can stimulate creativity by allowing individuals to explore ideas, keep track of thoughts or inspiration, and experiment with new outlooks or information.
-
Goal Setting: Keeping a journal can help set and track personal and professional goals, providing accountability and a record of progress.
-
Gratitude and Positivity: Gratitude journaling involves writing down what one is thankful for, promoting a positive outlook, and enhancing an overall sense of well-being.
-
Healing and Coping: Journaling can be a tool to deal with trauma, grief, or loss, by providing a sense of catharsis and release.
-
A Record: Journaling can provide an opportunity to write down and remember things that happen, for the future. It is a wonderful way to keep track of the progress of your life, a record of your inner life, and a historical testimony in the moment you are living in.
JOURNALING THROUGH A JEWISH LENS
Writing through a Jewish lens gives us an opportunity to process our lives: thoughts, feelings, memories, and experiences, in conversation with Jewish culture, history, tradition, belief, language, and spirituality.
We offer culturally sensitive questions and prompts that reflect and address universal and Jewish realities.
The prompts will be divided into six sections; easily accessible for anyone to begin their practice in a place that feels the most productive and healing at that moment.

WHY BEGIN NOW?
If you have never journaled before, you might be wondering why now is a good time to start.
As we are in the middle of a war in Israel and watching rising antisemitism all over the world, starting or maintaining a journaling practice might be beneficial as a much-needed emotional outlet to process overwhelming or intense emotions such as fear, grief, and anxiety; and reduce emotional distress. It is also a great opportunity to intentionally curate positive emotions such as hope, joy, and gratitude.
Journaling can be a great exercise in building resilience, by focusing on strengths, resourcefulness, or strategies for living mindfully in moments of crisis.
It can provide normalcy by developing a daily practice that offers structure and stability.
It also can give individuals insight into their reactions, beliefs, and values during a challenging time.
It is a great place for personal prayer and dialogues with Hashem.
Ultimately, journals can be kept as a private space or can be shared with loved ones or safe communities to seek and provide support and understanding during struggle.
